❤️ Thank you for supporting our local fisherman by buying fresh fish from The Farm Deli.
ℹ️ Here's a bit of info on the fisherman who caught the carpenter today:
JR Newman is a small-scale fisher from Struisbaai at the southernmost tip of Africa. JR hails from a family of traditional fishers, spanning five generations. He started fishing when he was just 12 years old, where he crewed onboard his grandfather's boat Weltevrede – a traditional wooden chukkie built in the 1980s. Today JR is a skipper of a ski-boat named Braveheart. Despite the many challenges faced by small-scale fishers year on year, fishing is very much JR's passion and one that he pursues wholeheartedly.
"I'm a fifth-generation traditional handline fisher. The low-impact fishing methods taught to me by my grandfather are still used onboard my boat today. We use one hook and one line to catch fish and we take care not to overfish. We exist with nature and are guided by the various fishing seasons. The life of a small-scale fisher can be challenging, especially in South Africa, but I am hopeful for my future."
